Every July, the USMD program organizes a language-immersion American experience for French teens to stay with families in our area. We have hosted 3 times and loved each summer spent sharing our typical daily life. Please consider hosting - you will get as much out of the experience as they do. It's so much fun! Contact me or share this link in case someone you know might consider hosting!

USMD 3-Peat
I first heard of the USMD French student exchange program when I came across an announcement at middle school. It sounded like a unique experience and an interesting way to spend 3 weeks in July to share our home and normal everyday life with a teen from another country. We met with the local coordinator and she matched us up with 14 yr old Felicie. My youngest daughter was the same age, and they shared common interests, so we said yes. I was a bit nervous because we don't typically go on summer vacations and I wasn't sure what we could do without breaking the bank. Turns out there are too many things to choose from once you start looking around! And we discovered there was alot of "touristy" stuff that we hadn't done which we really enjoyed! The girls shared a bedroom and were close sisters all summer. The following July, my daughter visited Felicie in France for 3 weeks. She got to experience a lifestyle and culture that is very different from ours, within the safety of a family that entrusted their daughter to us the summer before. She saw all the sights of Paris, spent time in the country, and also a week in the South of France enjoying water sports. We felt the entire USMD experience was incredibly rewarding.
That next summer we heard there were still a couple boys who were due to arrive here in a few days but were without host families. Since we had a bedroom open with my daughter going to France, we "adopted" a French son we nicknamed Tebow (kind of an American version of Thibault). He quickly became part of our family and some of my fondest memories of being a host family came from sharing our life him. Tebow had a wonderful sense of humor and adventure. He and my son got along very well together, just hanging out the way guys do. I'll never forget their Rambo movie marathon during a rainy week when all other plans got cancelled. The most memorable part of his stay was going on a family Scout campout at the lake. It was Tebow's first time tent camping and something he would never have done in France! The picture of Tebow above was taken on that trip, while tubing at Tims Ford Lake. Listening to Tebow and a troop of Boy Scouts interact with each other and their families was simply amazing. Everyone loved Tebow and if we could have him back, I would in an instant.
Our last hosting experience was a couple years ago, when 17 yr old Romaine came to stay with us. I had learned not to over-schedule, and to focus on activities that were culturally unique and showcase Tennessee. At the beginning of her stay I asked Romaine what she most wanted to do and what she hoped to gain from her time here. This helped us open a dialogue and concentrate on a couple of things from her bucket list. Between every scheduled activity were a couple days of normal summer stuff - like going to the pool or grocery shopping. I found this to be the most helpful way to keep a steady yet fun pace going. We participated in lots of activities with other host families - something that appealed to the older teens, but I also noticed in groups the immersive language experience takes a hit. By balancing the social life with family life both goals of having fun and increasing fluency were met. A couple unique experiences we had with Romaine were going to outdoor concerts and getting to meet a Cajun musician at a singer-songwriter performance. And we shared a favorite family activity with Romaine of going to the horse races. She really enjoyed this because she would never get to do that in France.
I have seen so many people experience something so unique and rewarding each and every summer, that I knew I would love helping other people connect with their soon-to-be French sons and daughters. It's a wonderful 3 weeks that goes by so fast and leaves everyone with the fondest of memories.

French Sudents 2016
(PLACED!) Alexandre is 15 years old and lives in Paris. Everybody calls him “Alex” and he describes himself as responsible, funny and open-minded. He really wants to hang out with a guy his own age and meet new friends here. He plays tennis and soccer in club sports each week, and another favorite sport is driving motocross. Alex likes to go mountain biking in Italy every summer (his mother is Italian and they have a home in Italy too). He also enjoys family trips to Corsica – an island in the South of France where he can surf and hang out on the beach. Alex’s father is a lawyer and a really good cook, and he enjoys cooking with his dad. His mother is a marketing consultant and Alex has a 17 year old sister. He’s been to the United States twice before : New York and on a trip that went from San Francisco to Las Vegas. Some of the other things Alex indicated he likes are: cars, snow-ski & water-ski, golf, bowling, and pool parties. He also enjoys watching TV, serials and movies, playing video games like FIFA. Alex has very good English comprehension, but he says he would like to speak better English so he can talk easier with his American friends. He is eagerly waiting to hear about the friends he will meet this July!
(PLACED!) Antoine is 14 years old and lives close to Paris in a neighborhood surrounded by farmland. He says he likes living in the French countryside. His father is a farmer and he likes helping him. His mother is a finance controller for a big corporation. He is the oldest of 3 children and has an 11 yr old sister and a 7 yr old brother - and there are two cute dogs that are a part of his family photographs! Antoine is responsible teen who is active in French scouting, and enjoys cycling. Last summer he went on a retreat that involved biking across country and staying in churches along the way. He also has an awesome hobby making remote controlled aircraft/drones. He loves new technology, science and inventions. He really likes being outdoors in nature and high on his list of favorite things to do is scuba diving, boating, swimming, hiking, fishing, and going to the beach. He also likes history and watching documentaries. He has taken 2 years of English and has good language & comprehension and seeks to improve his speaking ability. Antoine has travelled to England, Canada, Lebanon and India, but he has never participated in a home-stay program such as USMD. He is looking forward to discovering a new culture and way of life as a member of a typical American family with a boy his age.
(PLACED!) Leopold is 17 years old and is a national competitor in rowing, a sport he took up 4 years ago. He also loves tennis which he has been playing for over 10 years. He likes snow-skiing, swimming, hiking, volleyball, fencing, basketball and rugby as well. He likes to spend his downtime watching movies and playing video games. Leopold went to Seattle last summer with USMD and had a wonderful time, so much so that he signed up for Nashville this summer! His older brother was a USMD student as well. His parents are both in the pharmaceutical field. Leopold has traveled with his family to Australia, California, and New York City, and many trips to London and other cities in England with his parents and on school trips. Leopold’s favorite school subjects are Chemistry, English, Math, and History. His English language and comprehension skills are very good. He is mature, easy-going and responsible. He describes himself as open-minded, imaginative and kind but a little bit shy and indecisive. His goal is to have a great time with your family, improve his English speaking ability and meet new friends.
(PLACED!) Capucine is 17 years old and lives in a suburb just outside of Paris. She has both an older and a younger sister. She is a cheerful person who likes laughing, music & dancing, and making new friends. She loves fashion, shopping, travel, Zumba, amusement parks, movies and museums. Capucine plays tennis and paints, and she also likes to go running. Her favorite foods are scallops, cheese pastas and brownies. She has studied English for 7 years and understands almost everything and speaks it quite well. Capucine describes herself as creative, energetic, outgoing, and curious. Her favorite school subjects are English, history, Spanish, and economics. Her family travels a lot and Capucine is well prepared to come here to explore and experience everything you want to show her and to share in your everyday life. Her family offers to host her new American teenager in France as part of the exchange program. Capucine is very excited for this opportunity.
(PLACED!) Ulysse is 14 years old and has been studying English in school for 4 years. His family hosted a student from Knoxville this year so he knows firsthand what an immersion experience is like. His family loves America and he is excited to have this opportunity. Ulysse has a 19 yr old brother and a 17 yr old sister so he is used to spending time with people older than him. His father works in a bank and his mother is a lawyer, and they have a pet cat. He has traveled to the US before on a trip to Seattle - he loves American food, but he is not a fan of seafood! Ulysse really likes boating, cars, technology, cooking, and hanging out with friends. Other favorite activities include riding motor bikes, bowling, swimming, shopping, water-skiing, sailing, travel and the beach. History and science appeal to him as well. He describes himself as fun and open-minded, very easy-going. He is looking forward to meeting his American host family and is appreciative of the chance to discover our Southern culture.
(PLACED!) Marguerite lives in Paris and is 15 ½ - the youngest in her family with 3 siblings in their 20’s. She is traveling ahead of the group and will be here July 1 through July 20th*. She is hoping to become lifelong friends with an American teenager her age or older who will hopefully be able to travel to France next summer to stay with her. It is uncommon to be able to share our Fourth of July with the French teens because usually they are still in school right up to about the 5th or 6th of July. This is a great opportunity for you if you love celebrating the Fourth with music, bbq & fireworks! Marguerite is a typical teenage girl who loves cooking, cheerleading, dance, animals, photography, history, travel, the beach, art, shopping, fashion, movies and modern music (she’ll probably know all the words to every song popular right now!). She has been studying English for 8 years and says her comprehension and speaking skills are very good. Judging by the letter she has written for her host family, she is fluent, and was modest in her assessment of herself. She is hard-working, responsible, independent, active and playful. She’s been to England and loved it, and also to Morocco, Italy and Germany. However, coming to the U.S. is longtime dream and is very important to her. She is looking forward to discovering our way of life, what is typical in high school, what school buses are like, and just enjoying hanging out with you and your friends. She writes that she is ready for this trip and has been preparing for it a long time and will love everything that comes her way while she is in Nashville.
*The French chaperone arrives on July 9th with the rest of the group but with her fluency, translation will not be needed, and Marguerite has been allowed to do this due to her maturity and knowing that the local coordinator will be able to step in if needed.
(PLACED!) Margaux is 13 and lives in a seaport city in the south west of France. She has been studying English for 6 years and is fluent in comprehension and ready to make great progress with speaking in the immersive experience that USMD offers. Her parents are both opticians, and she has two older brothers. Margaux practices dance and gymnastics, but loves all sports. She especially loves swimming and playing on the beach. She often goes biking or running with her mother and learned to canoe last summer. Margaux is curious and likes meeting new people. She lists being active and doing things outdoors in nature as something she really likes. Also, fashion, photography, animals, music, swimming, boating, and horseback riding. She is very impatient for July to get here so she can meet her host family and see the sights and have a sister to go shopping with!
(PLACED!) Aurore will celebrate her 17th birthday while she is here this summer. She loves travel and being able to come to the USA again after a family trip to Fort. Lauderdale is a dream come true for Aurore. She is curious to discover American family life, our city, and see the sights. She wishes to learn so many different things while she is here, especially about our culture, the arts, the music, meeting your friends and explore so many new things. Aurore lives on an island on the Atlantic side of France. She lives with her parents and her father is a designer and she has older siblings in their 30’s and also a niece. Aurore likes many sports and being active with tennis, running, biking, walking, and swimming. She also plays the piano and loves art, music, dancing, and shopping. She describes herself as playful, sensitive, independent, open-minded and easy-going. She feels her comprehension of English is good, and hopes to improve her speaking skills by spending 3 weeks talking, listening and learning. Aurore loves the USA and says she is so lucky to be able to come back and share in your daily life.
(PLACED!) Simon is an extremely motivated 13 year old. He hasn’t had as much English as some of the older students but he is determined to discover the American culture, what kids his age do here and especially what is good to eat! His main goal is to progress in spoken English. This will be a true immersive experience for him, but his parents and Simon both want the opportunity; he is determined to learn while enjoying a great adventure this summer. If you have a talkative family and are willing to explore many ways to communicate as he learns, you will have a great time helping him build his vocabulary. The USMD students travel with an awesome chaperone, so no worries, help is just a phone call away! Simon loves being active and playing sports, especially rugby. He lives with his parents in the South of France, near the sea. They have a cat, and Simon also has two older half-brothers age 24 & 28. Simon has many friends who live in the city who regularly come to his house to hang out and play video games. Simon is interested in many things which will make it very easy for your family to do things that everyone enjoys as you show him Tennessee and share your life with him. He is a happy and confident kid, pleasant to be around, and according to his mom, not shy but not extroverted either – somewhat in the middle. Simon will go with the flow and enjoy every minute of it, and who knows, maybe by the end of July he will be a wild & crazy guy!
(PLACED!) Max is 15 years old and is described as easy-going, fun to be around, responsible and active. He lives just outside of Paris with his mom & dad, a 12 year old sister and they have a beautiful young Australian Shepherd named Irka. His father has always worked in American companies in the healthcare industry. His mother is an engineer, but now works as a project manager in a top French bank. Max is very close to his family and they do a lot of things together and with his cousins. They all enjoy traveling and he has visited many parts of Europe as well as places in Asia such as Singapore, Bali Island, and Thailand. He is excited to be a part of your family to compare life experiences and points of view, find out what favorite foods your family likes, to meet your friends and discover the American culture in a typical setting. Max likes a lot of sports and is in a swim club and a climbing club. He has quite a rivalry going on with his dad as they support opposing soccer teams Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain. Apparently it is a source of entertainment for his mother and sister to watch them defend their teams. He would probably love to go home with American-style comebacks to up the friendly competition with his dad! He is eager to know more about the activities and sports you enjoy. Max also likes computers and video games, movies and TV. His watch list includes The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones and movies such as Iron Man. He is looking forward to improving his English speaking skills in a less formal way than can be accomplished in a school classroom. Max has studied English for 5 years and in a talkative host family, he will practice all he has learned with this exciting opportunity to learn & discover our way of life. Max chose Nashville for its culture and family values, traditions and famous history and is looking forward to his time here this summer.
(PLACED!) Marguerite is 16 years old and will be celebrating her 17th birthday during her stay here this summer. She is the oldest in her family and has two younger sisters age 14 and 12. Her father is a farmer and her mother stays at home now but previously worked in a hospital. They live in a small village in the North of France. Marguerite decided to go to a boarding school in another town this year and loves both the independence and the weekends spent at home walking across the fields with her mother. She is motivated and enjoys discovering new places and cultures. She has visited England, Sweden, Turkey, Italy and Spain and this will be her first trip outside of Europe. She chose Nashville to experience the atmosphere of our city, see the landscape, and also because her father came here 20 years ago! Marguerite likes to stay fit and enjoys sports, running, rugby, swimming, skiing, and dance. She also likes fashion, shopping, music, movies, and cooking. She is involved in charity work with an organization that helps people obtain food and clothing. Marguerite describes herself as responsible and active, and feels her English comprehension is good to very good, and that her language skills are good. She’s been studying English for 7 years so the time she spends with your family will make a huge difference in her fluency.
